Don't Do God's Work For Him
I've been tempted for a long time to write a book called, "Things Jesus Never Said." I encounter so many believers and nonbelievers alike who swear by statements they believe (falsely) originated with Jesus or perhaps, the Bible.
For example, have you ever heard the phrase, "God helps those who help themselves"? This is a big one. But here's the truth: Jesus never said that. It doesn't appear in the Bible.
On the topic of helping yourself, Jesus had a lot to say, but here is something you can quote Him on:
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.
In the Book of Proverbs, King Solomon said it this way:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6.
Notice the difference between "helping yourself" and "come to me," or "trust in the Lord." The proverb explicitly says that we shouldn't lean on our own understanding.
I was reminded this week that we do ourselves a disservice when we try to solve our problems on our own. Don't get me wrong. God gave us brains for a reason.
But I believe it's wise to live our lives with a healthy appreciation of our limitations balanced by God's lack of any. When we see ourselves for who we are and begin to see God for who He is, we will quickly stop working on our own and start leaning into Him.
God is always working behind the scenes.
God is always operating on a level far beyond our thoughts or imagination.
God is not limited by what we "do" or don't don't do.
God is not limited by people or circumstances.
You may be carrying a burden right now. But that is unnecessary. Instead of carrying the burden, why not carry it to God like Jesus says? Why not feast your eyes on Scripture so that you can hear God's promises to you?
If you make the time, you will find that He's already done the heavy lifting for you. He's not asking you to help yourself. He's not asking you to do His work for Him.
Drop me a line and let me know how I can pray for you.
God bless!
